Spurs overcome 18-point deficit to down Raptors, 105-104

TORONTO –DeMar DeRozan scored 22 of his 25 points in the second half, Rudy Gay contributed 15 points off the bench, and the Spurs overcame an 18-point third quarter deficit to down the Raptors 105-104 on Sunday.

After LaMarcus Aldridge missed two free throws with 4 seconds left, Pascal Siakam missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Marco Belinelli’s 3-pointer gave the Spurs a 103-101 lead with 28 seconds left and atoned for two previous misses in the fourth quarter.

After Siakam missed a drive with 19.7 seconds left, Aldridge tapped the ball out to Lonnie White. On the other end, DeMar DeRozan sank two free throws after a drive in which he was fouled by Kyle Lowry.

After DeRozan sank both free throws with 9.3 seconds left, Lowry sank a 3-pointer to pull the Raptors within 105-104 with 4.8 seconds left.

DeMar DeRozan was asked before Sunday’s game if his second trip to Toronto since the Raptors traded him to the Spurs felt as strange as the first.

Spurs overcome 18-point deficit to down Raptors, 105-104

“It will always be strange, the amount of time I was here,” said DeRozan, who starred for the Raptors for nine seasons before they traded him and Jakob Poelt and a first-round draft pick to the Spurs in July 2018. “Come back, it will always bring back old memories. It will always be strange.”

The Spurs improved to 17-21 ovrall and 6-13 on the road.  The Raptors are 25-14.

The Spurs return to action on Wednesday night against the Heat in Miami. It’s the final game of a four-game road swing for the club.
