District committee denies eligibility for Judson transfers

Judson football coach Rodney Williams said Tuesday transfers Jordan Battles and L.J. Butler were ruled ineligible by the District 27-6A committee.

Williams said the committee met Tuesday and determined the pair, both seniors, transferred for athletic purposes, a UIL violation.

Williams expects the family of each athlete to appeal to the UIL state executive committee, which will make the final determination for eligibility.

Shaun Battles, Jordan’s father, said he is appealing the decision.

Battles enrolled at Judson in February after playing quarterback for Brandeis his sophomore and junior seasons.

Shaun Battles said he moved his family to be closer to work, which is why his son had to transfer from Brandeis.

Butler transferred from Wagner in June. Both participated in the Judson’s summer camps.

Battles guided Brandeis to the state quarterfinals the last two seasons. He was voted District 28-6A MVP last fall and was the Express-News Newcomer of the Year his sophomore season.

Butler earned a starting spot at running back as a freshman. He topped 2,000 yards in each of the last two seasons, helping the Thunderbirds advance to the Class 5A Division II state quarterfinal each year.

Wagner is now aligned in 6A and is in the same district (27-6A) as Judson.
