Canelo Álvarez set to fight Callum Smith at the Alamodome in December

Canelo Álvarez is coming to the Alamodome.

The Mexican star will fight Callum Smith to unify the WBA super middleweight titles on Dec. 19.

The San Antonio venue will have limited seating, like it did for Mario Barrios’ bout in front of a socially-distanced crowd of 9,024 last month.

Both boxers last fought in November 2019. Álvarez (53-1-2) knocked out Sergey Kovalev to win the WBO light heavyweight title. He later vacated the belt. Smith (27-0) earned a unanimous decision against John Ryder.

Álvarez, who’s only defeat was in 2013 at the fists of Floyd Mayweather Jr., wrote on Instagram that he’s “excited to return to this great state.”

“The wait has been long but I promise it will be worth it,” the 30-year-old told his followers.

In September, Álvarez sued Golden Boy Promotions and the DAZN streaming platform, citing a breach of contract on his 11-fight, $365 million deal. He was eventually released from his contract.

Tickets for the Álvarez-Smith fight will go on sale next week, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.

The Alamodome bout will be televised on DAZN.
