Spurs waive Chimezie Metu

The Spurs’ first move as NBA free agency opened Friday was to subtract a player, not add one.

Chimezie Metu, the second-year forward from USC who spent most of his professional career in the G-League, has been waived, the team announced.

The move saved the Spurs both a roster spot and cash. Had Metu remained on the roster after Nov. 29, the first $500,000 of his $1.66-million contract would have become guaranteed.

Selected 49th overall in 2018, the 23-year-old Metu appeared in 47 NBA games with the Spurs, averaging 2.3 points and 1.3 rebounds in 5.3 minutes. He played in only 18 games last season, by the end of which he was passed in the Spurs’ rotation by Drew Eubanks.
